About Andrew Hello, My name is Andrew Lo. I'm currently one-half of this Spring 12' Membership VP. I'm currently a sophomore with a major in Biology. My goals is to get a BA in Biology and hopefully attend medical school after I graduate. I like participating in sports such as basketball, swimming, badminton, bowling, etc. Besides that, like any other person, my favorite hobby is sleeping. If I'm free on the weekend, i would usually stay in bed all day and watch t.v. Initially, I had no intention of joining APO or no knowledge that it even existed. Honestly, i was one of those people who thought that once I enter college, I would never join a fraternity. But I was wrong. I asked my friend Qui(who was also planning to pledge at the time) to tell more of this fraternity that he always talked about in class. And I was interested because it dealt with community service. I thought that it would be a good way of boosting up my resume so i gave it chance. And here we are. I pledged Spring 2011 Kingsley Yee. One of the main reasons why I chose to be Membership was because I noticed that our chapter was losing morale and i thought by joining, it would boost it up. I love this fraternity and I felt it was my way of giving it back for everything that it has done for me. APO has taught many things such as, developing good speaking skills, getting rid of my fear of public speaking, grow as a role model for others, knowing when to step up to be a leader, doing stuff thats out of the box and out of my comfort zone. I wanted to bring back the LFS in our chapter because I've notice not a lot older members don't come around anymore so Christina and I want to change all that. My favorite things besides SERVICE are the fellowships! I find that these events are very stress relieving and takes your mind off your studies and school. Last year, I had the privilege of being one-half of your Fellowship Vice President. And it was one the most rewarding positions I have ever done. Prior to that, i had no experience of being a leader or doing anything that big. And i thought it was great to grow as a person. About Christina Hello, there! My name is Christina Hoang and I’m one-half of the spring 2012’s membership vice president. I’m currently a senior majoring in entrepreneurial/small business management but plans on switching to hospitality management since my major is no longer available at San Francisco State University. My plan is to one day open my own business (probably something in the food industry) and share my love for food with others. I was born in Texas but spent most of my time growing up in the Santa Clara County. I enjoy cooking on my free time, attending museums, doing arts and crafts and go sightseeing. I pledged exactly a year ago with the Kingsley Yee pledge class and was one-half of fall 2011’s banquet chair and scissor head. Before I pledged Alpha Phi Omega, I was extremely against fraternities and sororities. Whenever I heard those two words, all I could imagine were young men and women submitting to the activities of hazing. However, when I transferred to San Francisco State University, a friend of mine urged me to join Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, with her. I was convinced to pledge after attending the Food Bank service project. For two hours, I spent my time weighing and packaging boxes and boxes of frozen squash with members in the fraternity. I’ve always enjoyed doing community service but never had the chance to back in high school, so this was extremely exciting for me! Not only did I get a great experience helping others, I was also given the opportunity to make friends with those who share the same interest. The fact a fraternity can provide chances for people to help others and build friendships of a lifetime got me hooked! Plus, the fact they don’t do hazing was definitely a bonus! The Purpose of Membership VP Membership vice presidents focus on the retention of members. We do our best to contact members who have not been around and encourage them to come around more often. With the help from alumni advisors, we create events where current members and pledges get together and bond with our alumni. As each semester goes by, our members get older and sometimes feel left out. One of our goals this semester is to build stronger relationships between older and younger members by creating opportunities for them to talk and bond with one another. We also focus on retaining a large number of active members by keeping track of their requirements. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it knowing our chapter keeps getting bigger and bigger!
