A Message from the Service Vice President
Welcome back Mu Zeta!
I want to welcome you all back from a long, well-deserved break for all of us and hope you’re all ready to hit the ground running in the final stretch of the Spring 2008 semester! It’s now time to reflect on the past and be ready to set goals for an optimistic future.
In my last message to you, I promised you all a “one-of-a-kind” semester and to be honest, I got more than what I bargained for. In the first six weeks of this semester, as a chapter, we have struggled through many hardships, overcame numerous obstacles and fought off many tears, but through this, these obstacles brought out the best in each of us as individuals to mend fences between each other. As the old saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger,” and in our case, that was very true. Here’s another one, have you ever heard of the saying, “united we stand, divided we fall?” As corny as that may sound, this saying is very applicable to our brotherhood; we are all brothers/sisters here, and our primary focus should be to help, guide and support each other, whether it is inside or outside of our organization.
I am pleased to say that in the past few weeks, I have seen a change in Mu Zeta for the better; the chapter has been more unified than we have been in a long time. Let’s revisit some of the recent great MZ moments - on March 19, we had nearly 60 people attend Twin Night, and that is considered a huge milestone because we have not held an event in a long time (with banquet included) where that many members/pledges came out. Despite the rain and treacherous mountain driving, the annual Membership Picnic (and first ever combined chapter camping trip) was also huge success. Last but not least, at the Spring 2008 Sectionals Conference at Stanford. Mu Zeta rolled in all snazzy in our 80s gear and left being the BIGGEST WINNERS of the night! At the Business Meeting, we were the only the chapter that had ALL of our members who came to Sectionals in attendance to support Gerry, Cindy and myself for MZ’s Spring 2009 Conference Bid - not even AEN can claim that.
How well did Mu Zeta do during this past Spring Sectionals Conference?
- Being awarded the title to co-host the Spring 2009 Conference
- Winning the award for dressing the most in tune with the 80s
- Winning the Ugly Man award (thanks to Jason for being divalicious and Glenn for his on-stage splits!)
- Melissa, Zuberi and myself for winning the 2008 Interchapter Ocho Award
- Melissa, Patrice, Pomp and Erick for winning the 2008 Bright Spot Awards
…AND… - Capturing the 2008 Gold Pan in Leadership. Our section staff insider Gerry said that Mu Zeta was in close contention of winning the Overall Gold Pan. With a little persistence, we’ll bring that bad boy home in 2009!
These are all huge feats that couldn’t have been accomplished without you! Despite dealing with minor issues coming up, that didn’t stop our momentum and unity at Sectionals. Like I have said, many times over, the issues we deal with, are not restricted to Mu Zeta or Alpha Phi Omega for that matter; other chapters and organizations deal with the same types of issues, but it is up to each one of us to learn from a bad situation and deal with it maturely and make the most out of a good one and to still remain unified. I believe that Mu Zeta has successfully risen to that challenge. With that said, let’s make Mu Zeta the epitome of Section 4 and Region X that we already are.
In Leadership, Friendship and Service,
